While the nation and the state, respectively, report eight percent and ten percent unemployment figures, District 7 finds thirteen percent of its population unemployed. Most of Gene's family works in manufacturing, so Gene has seen the devastation the recession has caused. Gene understands that something has to be done to improve the economy in South Georgia. Gene will remind the politicians in Atlanta where the greatest impact of the recession has hit.

Gene understands local businesses drive South Georgia's economy. To foster stronger growth in South Georgia's economy, Gene will collaborate with local governments as well as state and federal officials to design better policies that encourage small business growth.

Additionally, Gene believes that South Georgia should invest in beautification and recreation projects. These investments in South Georgia will raise the standard of living for current residents and appeal to individuals and companies, including large manufacturers, looking to relocate.
